Morning Madness

Mornings can be a hectic time for many of us, and end with a mad rush for the door! How we begin each day can effect how the rest of our day will be. We all hope to have a smooth start to each day, but sometimes things just don’t seem to go our way. If we begin each day feeling positive and focused, it ensures for a more productive and enjoyable day.

Take a few minutes to clarify exactly what you want to accomplish that day. Don’t just write a task list every morning — we all know that it’s possible to work hard all day long and not really accomplish anything! Think about: what you have to do today, what you have been putting off doing, and what you’d like to do today. Once you have thought about that, imagine yourself at the end of the day looking back at all of the things you did during the day. Think about which things really matter, and which things make the biggest difference. It’s those tasks that need to be on your list, and it’s those things that you need to focus on to make your day productive.

Music is always a great way to get you going in the morning! I love playing my favorite music to help energize me and get me pumped for the day. Music has been shown to reduce stress and have a positive effect on health. Listening to music as you get ready and start your day will create positive energy and a sense of fun, or a soothing sense of peace depending on what you play!

A simple five-minute, full-body stretch can give you a natural jumpstart by gently raising your heart rate so that your body feels awake and ready to handle the day’s challenges. In addition, unlike coffee, stretching improves the strength and flexibility of your muscles to help you be more energetic throughout the day. When you’re done your whole body will be filled with natural mood-elevating endorphins, leaving you feeling great and ready for the rest of your morning!

Be grateful for 5 minutes. Focus your mind on something you’re really grateful for and stay there. It might be your family, friends, wealth, health or just the present moment. There’s nobody between you and that thing, and you’re free to feel grateful and happy. It’s only 5 minutes, but the impact of such a day starter can be immense.

Have something to be excited about today! When you wake up, think about one specific action or nice thing you can do for yourself ( or someone else) that day… then make a solid decision to do it. When you have something you are excited about, you are more likely to get out of bed alert and looking forward to the day.

Everyone’s morning routine is different. You should experiment and find a routine that works best for you. It might be going for a light morning walk, taking a warm shower, meditating, doing some light yoga stretches,  writing in a journal, or organizing your belongings the night before. Whatever it might be, it’s important to develop a pleasant morning routine that makes you eager to get out of bed and start each day!
